Police arrested rapper Lil Tjay amid the shooting of Migos cofounder Offset in Florida, but his lawyer is slamming “false rumors” that he was involved.
The rapper’s apparent lawyer, Dawn M. Florio, said in a statement posted to Instagram early Tuesday that the rapper born Tione Merritt “has not been shot, nor has Lil Tjay been charged with any shooting.”
Merritt was arrested Monday on charges of disorderly conduct (affray) and operating a vehicle without a valid license, according to Broward County Jail records viewed by USA TODAY. Seminole police also confirmed Merritt’s arrest “in connection with the incident” that began with an affray, or fight, saying in a statement shared with USA TODAY that “Merritt was booked into the Broward County Jail late last night. A second person detained at the scene has not been charged.”
Florio continued, “Any reporting to the contrary is false. We encourage people to consult trusted news sources, and to verify the accuracy of any reporting, before reflexively sharing or repeating baseless rumors.”
A combined $3,000 bond has been set for Merritt’s charges.
Rumors of the Bronx rapper’s involvement began circulating online after news broke of Offset’s shooting on Monday, April 6, outside of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
The Seminole Police Department also confirmed in a statement that the office is “aware of an incident that occurred at a valet area after 7 p.m. Monday outside of Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood that resulted in non-life-threatening injuries to an individual who was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood.”
The statement continued: “Seminole Police were on site immediately, and the situation was contained quickly.”
