Carly Rae Jepsen: “I Never Had a Career Strategy”

Carly Rae Jepsen says she has never followed a specific strategy when it comes to her career. The 40-year-old singer believes some of her biggest opportunities came from simply saying yes and taking unexpected turns.
Jepsen is currently writing the music and lyrics for the Broadway-bound adaptation of the 1999 teen romantic comedy “10 Things I Hate About You.” She believes the project may never have happened if she had not agreed to appear in a production of “Cinderella” in 2014.
“I don’t think 10 Things would have happened had I not said yes to Cinderella back then,” she told People.
The “Call Me Maybe” singer admitted that she never had a detailed plan for where she wanted her career to go.
“It sounds like I was smart and had a strategy. It wasn’t like that. I just got a phone call and I said yes,” she explained.
Jepsen said that taking that unexpected turn turned out to be a relief. She believes some of her best decisions have come from not overthinking things and simply taking a chance.
“I feel really happy that I took that left turn. It’s actually brought so much,” she said.
A New Chapter as a Mother
Jepsen is also enjoying a new chapter in her personal life after welcoming her first child, Ilya Blue, seven months ago.
The singer, who married music producer Cole M.G.N. in 2025, said becoming a mother has brought a completely new experience for both of them.
“We’re figuring it out together, and it’s all so new to us. We’re really enjoying it,” she told People.
Jepsen also continued working on new music while she was pregnant. She described motherhood as a welcome change after periods of her life that felt more solitary.
“I’ve had other chapters that were lonelier, like I was on a journey not knowing where it was leading. It feels like a really fresh new chapter that I’m in now, with a family that I couldn’t be more grateful for,” she said.
