Harry Styles has paid an emotional tribute to his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne, performing an unreleased acoustic song dedicated to his friend.
The singer debuted the song during a sold-out performance at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, where he is currently performing as part of his Together, Together tour residency.
The emotional moment took place on the second anniversary of Payne’s death at age 31. The singer died after falling from a balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In a video shared by Billboard, Styles addressed the audience before introducing the song, reflecting on the loss of his friend and the importance of supporting one another through difficult times.
“Two years ago today, I lost one of those friends. I’m sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven’t. But really, it’s just about looking after each other,” Styles told the crowd.
He went on to express gratitude for the people who have made a lasting impact on his life.
“There are so many people who have touched my life in such special ways that I wouldn’t be here without. I’m gonna play you a song I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that’s all right,” he added.
Styles introduced the unreleased track as “What Is Enough” before beginning the melodic acoustic performance. The song featured poignant lyrics reflecting on grief, remembrance and the difficulty of saying goodbye.
“I’m not wise enough / But I wrote you a letter just to burn it up / And watch it rise like you’re in the sky,” Styles sang.
The intimate performance offered fans a rare glimpse into the singer’s personal experience of losing his longtime friend and bandmate.
Styles and Payne were among the original members of One Direction, joining the group in 2010 before the band went on hiatus in 2016, following the release of five studio albums and a string of global hits.
Their time together helped make One Direction one of the most successful boy bands of their generation, building a connection between the members that continued beyond their years performing together.
With the debut of “What Is Enough,” Styles honored Payne’s memory through music, sharing a deeply personal tribute with thousands of fans gathered to remember the late singer.
