In a special BBC Radio 6 Music interview, supermodel and cultural icon Kate Moss shared insights into her friendship with the late David Bowie. Speaking with host Nick Grimshaw from the new David Bowie Centre at the V&A East Storehouse, Moss revealed details about their bond, her role in collecting his final Brit Award, and her lasting memories of the star.
The conversation coincides with the release of her podcast, David Bowie: Changeling, which is available now on BBC Sounds. When asked why she agreed to the project, Moss explained she “couldn’t really refuse him, even though he’s not around.” She believes he is still “in the ether” and was eager to take part in a project with BBC 6 Music, a station she has long admired.
Moss recalled her first encounter with Bowie during a photoshoot, which was followed by an intense four-hour interview for Q magazine. The experience was a mix of admiration and torture, as a sleep-deprived Moss struggled to keep up with his probing questions. “He really was quite cutting,” she recalled, with a laugh, but noted his incredible sense of humour and curiosity.
One of the most memorable moments of their friendship was when Moss collected Bowie’s Brit Award for Best British Male in 2014. She famously wore his original Kansai Yamamoto Ziggy Stardust jumpsuit. Moss shared that the outfit fit her perfectly, and she was “so happy” to wear it. The singer later told her, “You smashed it,” an affirmation she cherished. The interview also touched on the artist’s fearless creativity, with Moss describing him as someone who had an innate “determination” and was never one to “people please.” Her final memory of Bowie was sending him a video of herself singing “Mr. Bojangles” for his last birthday.
