Russell Crowe Reflects on His Hollywood Career: ‘I’ve Mismanaged It Greatly’

Written by on September 11, 2026

Russell Crowe has reflected on his long acting career, admitting that he has “mismanaged my relationship with Hollywood greatly,” although he says his unconventional approach has ultimately worked in his favor.

The 62-year-old New Zealand-born actor rose to fame with Romper Stomper in 1992 before starring in major films such as L.A. Confidential, The Insider, Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind. His performances have earned him an Oscar, a BAFTA and two Golden Globes.

Speaking at the Venice Film Festival, where he premiered his documentary What Love Builds, Crowe explained that his personality and sense of humor have sometimes caused problems in Hollywood. He also said he chooses projects based largely on instinct, describing a physical feeling he gets when a script truly connects with him.

Crowe, who wrote, directed and produced the documentary, said the film is “extremely intimate and extremely personal” and explores his musical career alongside his acting work.

Despite believing he still has much more to accomplish creatively, Crowe said he is increasingly focused on spending time with his sons, Charles and Tennyson. He suggested that as he gets older, he may choose family time in Europe over spending long periods on film sets.
