Billy Joel Opens Up About Brain Disorder and Recovery

Billy Joel has opened up about his recent health problems after being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a condition caused by a buildup of fluid in the brain.
The “Piano Man” singer said he first noticed something was wrong when he began having balance problems and felt as if he were “on a boat.” After seeing a neurologist, he was diagnosed with NPH.
Doctors recommended surgery to implant a shunt to help drain the excess fluid. Joel initially resisted, but changed his mind after learning the procedure could improve his balance and memory.
“I don’t want to lose my marbles,” the 77-year-old singer said. He later reported that his memory, balance and ability to function improved after the surgery.
The health scare also led Joel to step away from live performances. He said doctors warned that performing loud rock shows could put additional stress on his brain, so he is currently focusing on recovery and physical therapy.
Despite the challenges, Joel reassured his fans that he is doing okay.
“I’m not going anywhere. I’m here. I’m still here,” he said.
Joel first announced his diagnosis in May 2025, when he canceled his upcoming performances to focus on his health.
