Kim Kardashian Reveals Esophagitis Diagnosis and Fears About Potential Long-Term Health Complications

Written by on November 2, 2026

Kim Kardashian has revealed that she has been diagnosed with esophagitis, opening up about her concerns over the potential long-term complications associated with the condition.

The reality television star and businesswoman shared the news in a preview of the upcoming eighth season of The Kardashians, which premiered on Hulu. In the emotional footage, the 45-year-old reflects on her health and the possibility of developing a more serious illness in the future.

In one particularly concerning moment, Kardashian can be heard discussing what her health could look like 15 years from now as footage shows her being wheeled down a hospital corridor on a bed.

“In 15 years, you’ll develop… I don’t even want to say it, but something horrible,” she says in the voiceover.

The trailer also reveals that the SKIMS founder has been diagnosed with a condition known as esophagitis.

According to the Mayo Clinic, esophagitis is inflammation and irritation of the tissues lining the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach.

Acid reflux is one of the most common causes of the condition. However, esophagitis can also develop as a result of certain medications or an accumulation of white blood cells in the esophageal lining.

Kardashian Opens Up About Her Father’s Cancer Battle

Kardashian’s diagnosis carries additional emotional weight because of her family’s history with cancer.

Her father, Robert Kardashian, died of esophageal cancer in 2003 at the age of 59. In another scene from the trailer, Kim is shown lying in a hospital bed wearing a medical gown when someone off-camera asks her a particularly difficult question:

“Isn’t that what your dad died from?”

Although esophagitis and esophageal cancer are two different conditions, chronic inflammation of the esophagus can sometimes be associated with an increased risk of developing certain complications.

According to the University of Washington’s Division of Gastroenterology, chronic esophagitis is relatively common and can result from persistent acid reflux.

The department also explains that approximately one in 10 people with reflux may develop a condition called Barrett’s esophagus. This occurs when the normal lining of the esophagus is replaced by a different type of tissue that carries an increased risk of becoming cancerous.

However, having esophagitis does not mean someone will develop esophageal cancer.

What Are the Possible Complications of Esophagitis?

The Mayo Clinic identifies several potentially serious complications associated with esophagitis, particularly when the condition is left untreated or becomes chronic.

These may include scarring or narrowing of the esophagus, difficulty swallowing, unhealthy weight loss and dehydration.

The severity of the condition and its potential complications can vary depending on the underlying cause, making proper medical evaluation and treatment important.

The Kardashian Family’s History of Health Scares

This is not the first time the Kardashian family has publicly discussed concerns about cancer and other serious health conditions on their reality television series.

In 2024, Kris Jenner revealed that doctors had discovered a tumor on her ovary. Following the discovery, the family matriarch underwent a hysterectomy as part of her medical treatment.

Now, Kim’s diagnosis is bringing another deeply personal health issue into the spotlight, particularly given the loss of her father to esophageal cancer.

As viewers await the new season of The Kardashians, Kim’s revelation offers a glimpse into her concerns about her health, her family’s medical history and the uncertainty surrounding her long-term well-being.
