Doja Cat has opened up about her past “problems” with alcohol and drugs.
In a candid video posted to TikTok on Monday, the Say So singer – real name Amala Dlamini – reflected on the connection between substance abuse and people with “uncared for (or) undiagnosed mental illness”.
“The best example, from my experience, is using the Internet as a means of validation to the negative thoughts in my head, which were then brought on by drinking alcohol,” she said. “I’ve never had a real problem with drugs, except for weed, but… alcohol is something that I definitely have had a problem with – I was never an alcoholic, but I definitely had problems.”
Doja went on to insist that it’s “not good to pair these two things together”, and reminded fans that they’re not “indestructible”.
Elsewhere in the footage, the artist revealed she used cocaine at one point.
“I have struggled with cocaine… I think could have been like eight years ago, but I’m well past that, so… thank God,” the 30-year-old shared, before urging anyone with mental health battles to avoid the Internet. “If people are commenting stuff that makes you hate yourself… validates the stuff that you already hate about yourself, just know that first of all, you probably need help – second of all, they probably need help.”
To conclude, Doja called the Internet “everyone’s favourite place to project”.
“Be clear in your words – this isn’t a place where people want to be clear… not everything is the truth; not everything is so cut and dry,” she added.
Representatives for the Kiss Me More star have not yet commented on the videos.
