Adele Wanted to Record One Direction’s ‘Fool’s Gold’ But Harry Styles Got There First

Written by on November 4, 2026

Adele once tried to get her hands on a One Direction song, but the track had already been promised to the boy band.

The surprising revelation comes from songwriting duo Jamie Scott and Mozella, who worked closely with One Direction on their 2014 album Four.

Speaking about the creation of fan-favourite track ‘Fool’s Gold’ in Jason Lipshutz’s new book, A Whole Lotta History, Mozella revealed that the song was written during an incredibly productive studio session that also produced another track.

The songwriting pair immediately recognised that they had something special on their hands, with Mozella describing it as “just this real, honest, raw song.”

After finishing the track, Jamie played it to Harry Styles, who was instantly impressed.

However, Harry wasn’t the only superstar who fell in love with the ballad.

Jamie revealed that Adele also heard the song and was so taken with it that she personally contacted him.

Recalling the moment, he said: “I remember getting a call from Adele, saying, ‘I just heard this song that you wrote for One Direction!’”

Adele is believed to have heard the track through her work with Jamie or producer Ryan Tedder.

Unfortunately for the Grammy-winning singer, there was one major obstacle: Jamie had already promised the song to One Direction.

Mozella explained: “Basically, [Adele] heard it and was like, ‘I love this!’ But he had already promised it to the boys, so we couldn’t take it back.”

As a result, ‘Fool’s Gold’ remained with One Direction and was included on their fourth studio album, Four, released in 2014.

The record went on to become another major success for Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik, reaching number one in both the UK and US. ‘Fool’s Gold’ has since become one of the album’s most cherished tracks among fans.

Meanwhile, another surprising Adele music revelation has recently come to light.

Rapper Tinie Tempah revealed that the singer once recorded an unexpected rap for an unreleased version of his 2011 hit ‘Earthquake’, featuring Labrinth.

The ‘Pass Out’ hitmaker, who recently returned with his first album in nine years, The Night’s Not Dead, revealed that Adele was in the studio when the track was being created and decided to have some fun on the microphone.

Speaking to The Sun’s Bizarre column, Tinie explained that Adele was particularly inspired by Nicki Minaj at the time.

He said: “She [Adele] was actually in the studio when I made Earthquake with Labrinth. We were having a little muck around on the mic.

“At the time, she really liked Nicki Minaj and had Nicki Minaj-type raps and stuff like that.”

When asked whether fans might ever get to hear the unreleased version, Tinie wasn’t particularly confident.

“Oh my goodness, let’s see if she clears it. Let’s see,” he replied.
