Dave Grohl Breaks Down in Tears After Joining AC/DC Onstage for ‘Highway to Hell’

Written by on November 4, 2026

Dave Grohl has revealed that he was left “sobbing like a baby” after sharing the stage with his rock heroes AC/DC in an unforgettable career moment.

The Foo Fighters frontman joined the legendary Australian rock band for a performance of their iconic hit ‘Highway to Hell’ during their October 2 concert at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium.

The emotional moment came after Foo Fighters had the opportunity to open for AC/DC for a second time, making the experience even more special for Grohl.

Speaking to New Zealand radio station The Rock, Dave admitted that he was overwhelmed with emotion as soon as he walked offstage.

He recalled: “It was so crazy because my wife was on the side of the stage. We played Highway To Hell. I walked off stage and I broke down in tears, sobbing like a baby.

“I was sobbing, like wailing, sobbing, and I couldn’t believe it. I was, like, ‘That is one of the most full-circle moments of my entire life,’ and I will never forget it.”

Grohl also revealed that AC/DC delivered the loudest live performance he had ever experienced.

“And just so you know, that is the loudest stage I have ever stood on in my entire life. More than Motörhead, more than any other band. AC/DC is the loudest band in the world, I think,” he added.

Foo Fighters’ second opportunity to support AC/DC came after severe weather forced the cancellation of their September 25 show at MetLife Stadium.

The band had initially joined the Power Up tour as a replacement for The Pretty Reckless at the St. Louis concert on September 8.

For Grohl, getting to share the stage with AC/DC was a dream come true and a major bucket-list achievement.

During their original opening performance, he told the crowd just how much the opportunity meant to him.

“I was so excited to have the honour to open up for AC/DC tonight,” he said.

“But now, as excited as I was to have the opportunity, the honour to open up for AC/DC, which has never happened and is a huge f****** bucket list check, even more than that, I was mostly excited to get off this stage and f****** watch AC/DC for the next couple hours.”

He continued: “So, as much as I loved hanging with you tonight from here, I can’t f****** wait to hang with y’all tonight from out there.”

The Foo Fighters singer also joked about the possibility of touring with AC/DC again, telling fans: “We never say goodbye, because we always come back. I don’t know if we’ll ever open for AC/DC again, although honestly I think it’d be a great f****** tour.”

Grohl also made sure to acknowledge The Pretty Reckless, thanking the band for making their appearance possible.

“We wouldn’t be here right now if it weren’t for them,” he said, before joking: “Oh my god, send them a f****** cheese basket.”

He wrapped up by thanking the audience and expressing his excitement about seeing AC/DC take over the stage.

“So thank y’all so much. I can’t wait until the rock and roll band comes on stage and the rock show actually starts. See you around.”

For Grohl, who has spent decades performing alongside some of the biggest names in rock, sharing the microphone with AC/DC proved that even rock legends can still have once-in-a-lifetime fan moments.
