Jay-Z Reveals the Story Behind His MAGA-Critical Lyric on Kanye West’s “Jail”

Written by on October 3, 2026

Jay-Z and Kanye West reportedly spent weeks arguing over a politically charged lyric in “Jail,” a track from West’s 2021 album Donda.

The disagreement centered on Jay-Z’s reference to a “red cap,” widely interpreted as a reference to the red MAGA hats associated with Donald Trump and his political movement.

According to Jay-Z, West wanted the lyric changed, but Jay-Z refused to rewrite the line. Instead, he gave West another option: remove his entire verse from the song.

West ultimately decided to keep Jay-Z’s full verse, including the controversial political reference, on Donda.

The dispute was discussed by Jay-Z in his HBO Max docuseries JAŸ-Z in 8, during a conversation with legendary producer Rick Rubin about his creative process and collaborations.

The story also offers a glimpse into the sometimes complicated relationship between two of hip-hop’s biggest artists. Jay-Z and West had previously collaborated on the acclaimed 2011 album Watch the Throne, but their relationship became strained over the years.

Despite their disagreements, Jay-Z’s contribution to “Jail” remained on the final version of Donda, preserving the lyric that had sparked the weeks-long creative dispute.

The episode highlights how artistic differences can extend beyond music itself, particularly when lyrics touch on politics, identity and personal beliefs.
