Housekeeper Mauled by Dog Outside Chris Brown’s Home Accepts Reduced $9.5 Million Award

A housekeeper who was mauled by a large dog outside Chris Brown’s Los Angeles home in 2020 has agreed to accept a reduced settlement of $9.5 million.
A jury initially awarded Maria Avila $12.9 million in damages following a trial in June. However, Judge Huey Cotton later ruled that the amount was not supported by the evidence and called the award “excessive.”
At a hearing last week, the judge told Avila that she would have to face a new trial focused on damages if she rejected the reduced amount.
Avila’s attorney filed a notice Thursday confirming that she “unequivocally accepts and consents to the reduction” of her damages award.
During the hearing, Avila’s lawyers argued that she suffered serious damage to her radial nerve, resulting in limited movement in her wrist and fingers and difficulty gripping objects. They said her injuries have affected everyday activities, including writing, typing, dressing, cleaning and personal care.
Her attorneys had asked the court to reduce the original award to $11 million rather than $9.5 million.
Both Brown and Avila testified during the Los Angeles trial. Avila became emotional while describing the December 12, 2020 attack at Brown’s home in the Tarzana neighborhood of the San Fernando Valley.
She told jurors that the attack caused severe injuries to her arm and face, extensive scarring and post-traumatic stress disorder.
“I will never be the same again,” Avila said.
