Former American Idol Contestant Caleb Carl Flynn Convicted of Murder

Written by on September 30, 2026

Former American Idol contestant Caleb Carl Flynn has been convicted of murder in connection with the fatal shooting of his wife, Ashley, a schoolteacher and volleyball coach.

Prosecutors accused Flynn, a musician and pastor, of staging a home invasion after shooting his wife in February. During the trial, a woman who testified that she had an affair with Flynn said he had told her that he hated his wife and had thoughts of killing her.

Alleigha Botner testified that she met Flynn in 2022, when she was a 20-year-old intern at his church, and that they had an affair for more than a year.

According to an assistant Miami County prosecutor, Flynn texted Botner the night before the shooting, writing: “I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow.”

Flynn could face life in prison without the possibility of parole when he is sentenced next Monday.

According to the Associated Press, Flynn struggled to maintain his composure as the judge read the guilty verdicts on charges of murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence. He began sobbing after the jury was dismissed.

His attorney called the verdicts “disappointing” and said he expects to appeal.

Flynn appeared on American Idol in 2013, telling viewers that his wife had encouraged him to pursue his dream of becoming a singer. He performed for judges Mariah Carey, Randy Jackson and Nicki Minaj but did not advance to the Hollywood round.
