Shaboozey has praised Dolly Parton for her enormous influence on country music, crediting the legendary singer with helping the genre reach audiences around the world.
The 31-year-old singer, whose track ‘Amen Cowgirl’ pays tribute to Dolly’s iconic hit ‘9 to 5’, revealed that Parton has long been admired in his family, highlighting just how far her influence extends beyond the United States.
Speaking to PEOPLE, the ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’ hitmaker shared that his father, who was born and raised in Nigeria, was a huge fan of the country music icon.
He said: “She was one of my dad’s favourite country artists.
“He was born in Nigeria and grew up there. The fact that he knows Dolly Parton just shows you how much of a global impact she had on the entire world, not just Nashville.”
Shaboozey also praised Dolly’s dedication to country music and her contributions to shaping the genre into what it is today.
He added: “And just her activism and just her wanting to just see country music become what it is today. I think she accomplished that, man. Dolly Parton forever.”
The singer also celebrated country music’s growing popularity, particularly the increasing success of female artists on the charts.
His comments come after his own chart record was overtaken by Ella Langley’s hit ‘Choosin’ Texas’, which enjoyed an impressive run at number one.
Rather than seeing it as a disappointment, Shaboozey welcomed the achievement, describing it as another exciting moment for country music.
He said: “It’s cool to see Ella Langley getting the longest number one of all time. ‘Choosin’ Texas’ beating me out.”
Shaboozey previously made history with his breakthrough hit ‘A Bar Song (Tipsy)’, which matched Lil Nas X’s ‘Old Town Road’ as the longest-running non-holiday number one in Billboard Hot 100 history, spending 19 weeks at the top of the chart.
Reflecting on the genre’s expanding popularity, the singer suggested that Dolly would be thrilled to see country music reaching new audiences and attracting fans from all walks of life.
He said: “Just seeing country music becoming what it is and fun and everybody enjoying it in just different places, again, it’s what Dolly would’ve wanted as well.
“So it’s just cool to see women really kicking butt. I’ll say that.”
For Shaboozey, Dolly Parton’s legacy represents everything that makes country music special: its ability to cross borders, bring people together and continue evolving for generations to come.
